Epona

Some listeners might recognize the name Epona as belonging to Link's trusty steed in the Legend of Zelda games. Well, the name has an impressive heritage - Epona was a celtic goddess of (among a few other things) horses and cavalrymen. The title "A Rose for Epona" comes from the not uncommon practice of offering rose petals at Epona's shrines in order to obtain a blessing.

The Battle of Kursk

Sabaton's "Panzerkampf" tells the story of The Battle of Kursk, arguably the single most decisive mass engagement in World War 2 and one of the largest battles ever fought. Coming on the heels of Stalingrad, Kursk began with a massive German attack. However, such was the buildup towards this offensive that the Russians had time to construct the most extensive defensive lines in the history of the world. With theme fortifications and their earlier experience, the Red Army repulsed the Nazi attack and pushed back, gaining a decisive victory and the strategic initiative for the rest of the war.

Technical Difficulties

Sorry about the beginning there. Not sure what the problem was, but it seems to have resolved itself.

The Kalevela

The Kalevela is the "national epic" of Finland, compiled from traditional Finnish folklore in the early-mid 19th century. It is a central part of Finnish national identity... and as such is referred to by several of the bands that appear regularly on this show. Most notably, Ensiferum's "Heathen Throne" uses several passages taken directly from the Kalevela, including the line "Under the Northern Star/We shed our blood/With the call of a battle horn/we raise our swords" which provided the inspiration for the title of this show.
