Overlooked...By Michael M. on October 16, 2007 in mp3blog![]() Frog Eyes’s new album, Tears of the Valedictorian, released last spring flew under the radar. Tears of the Valedictorian holds its own against Of Montreal’s Hissing Fauna and Sunset Rubdown’s Random Spirit Lover, similar sounding albums that got more hype in these parts. (Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes collaborated with Spencer Krug in the band Swan Lake). I find it hard to distinguish the different instrumental voices in frog eyes, but there is something incredibly powerful about dense, polyphonic noise. Mercer sings cryptic lyrics that have a certain enigmatic beauty: “Did you gaze upon the waves and did you consider yourself / A symphony of runaways?” he sings in 'The Policy Merchant, The Silver Bay' then, referring to himself, says “Mercer is a merchant, a policy merchant.” Tears of the Valedictorian is an album you want to dissect like a novel in literature class, but end up getting lost in its own dark mystique. I present tracks 4,5,6 in order as a microcosm of the whole album. In short, Tears of the Victorian is an epic. Its magnificence is Odyssey-worthy in depth and glory.
