Mos Def Magic?

By Hibah on December 26, 2006 in mp3blog

So Mos Def’s new album, True Magic, is coming out in a couple of days. I’m pretty pumped, but I’m also nervous (remember The New Danger? Don’t worry if you don’t; the weak beats and flabby lyrics made it easier to forget than my dad’s new cardigan).

Luckily, the leaks I’ve heard are more like 1999’s Black on Both Sides: sharp lyrics, laidback beats that highlight samples and rhymes. The album’s production, concocted by geniuses like Pharrell and Kanye, add a lot to songs like “True Magic”, the title track which kicks off the album. The track won’t change your life, but the throbbing beat and confident melodies will make you nod your head and feel alright. Not the highest praise, I know.

mos def always looks good

Unfortunately, tracks like “Thug is a Drug” are easier to ignore. The beats aren’t strong or interesting enough to make up for the lack of melody, and the chorus gets annoying really quickly. Decide for yourself:

Luckily, the next track, “Crime & Medicine” picks things up with a reggae-infused background and the laidback, confident delivery that made Mos Def as revered as he is.

Still, it’s hard to touch his old stuff. REMEMBER HOW GOOD THAT STUFF WAS? Remember how wide your eyes turned the first time you heard it? Here are some reminders:

What are you talking about???
did you even listen to new danger??
what exactly does flabby lyrics mean? If you mean hard as hell, or sublimly insightfull than i agree with you. But I remember my dad's cardigan pretty well so its kinda on your silly ass. Show some respect to what you don't know about. But what the hell do people in MN know about besides snow any way?
