This Is Your Record

I don't completely understand who or what Snake & Jet's Amazing Bullit Band is. Their name is laborious to say; there is little information on the internet. I have no idea who sent us the album.

Admittedly, I have a very linear understanding of musical history. In my head, bands are placed into categories, locations, styles, genres; an internal hierarchy that enables me to comprehend new music. Context is key. I'm sure some readers out there might hinge at my compulsive need to understand something as mundane as punk subgenres, but there is something about the multitude of labels that keeps a music critic warm at night.

That being said, who the hell are these guys? Well, start off with basic facts: Thor and Thomas from Copenhagen. Imagine, if you will, that the history of rock and indie music was a strip of soil and you dragged a rake across this timeline of dirt. Some songs drive with that keyboard fronted sound of the doors, there are blues references, stoic singing, and gangly proto-punk guitar riffs. Somewhat akin to the white stripes, only the white stripe relish in their old-time aesthetic, while Snake & Jet's are futuristic, modern, and technicolored.

Their current myspace lists them as progressive/progressive/progressive, although it apparently once read Melodramtic Popular Song/Showtunes/Tropical. The booklet, like many cd booklets before it, contains seemingly random pictures: forest, a drawing, two men on a dock (the band?), a car with doors open and keyboads pouring out, more trees, and a blurred image of a soundboard. Are these cd pictures just from some Danish band I've never heard of....or glimpses of another world?
