Let the Sunshine in

Pitchfork's Marc Hogan recently gave a lukewarm review to the Weakerthan's new album, Reunion Tour, citing its "staid accompaniment[s]". Now I can't defend the album as a whole--I haven't even heard it in its entirety--but I can say that I was lucky enough to download one track, "Sun In An Empty Room", a couple months ago, and I'm shocked that Hogan declined to mention it. If the rest of Reunion Tour isn't as strong, well, I'm not surprised--"Sun In An Empty Room" is pretty great. Songwriter/vocalist John Samson ( "the best [lyricist] right now" according to the Hold Steady's Craig Finn") uses the subtleties of interpersonal interaction and the mundanities of daily life to outline the end of a relationship. It's an understated song, which makes its vividness that much more remarkable, and it's capped off by a swelling, hypnotic keyboard riff that would burn up any accusation of staidness that might enter its orbit.

I think their new LP is Reunion Tour—Reconstruction Site was their last.
